One game away from clinching It was a slow week for Nantucket’s varsity basketball teams last week with the weather playing havoc with the schedules. With only two more wins to earn before securing a definite place in the post season, the Lady Whalers managed only one game on Saturday. Nantucket has been burying opponents all season by an average of 30 points. Saturday’s game at South Shore Voke was no different. Five Nantucket players accounted for 61 points in the 73-35 drubbing. Shantel Hanniford dominated play by racking up another double-double, dropping 17 points with 16 rebounds and five assists. Jess Halford was high scorer for the Whalers with 19 points. Ashley Clinger chipped in for nine, with Bianca Brown and Lindsay Fry contributing eight each. The team ended the week with a 9- 2 record and in search of the 10th win. With several cancelled games to be made up in the next three weeks, both varsity teams will be very busy. The girls meet up with their last Lighthouse League opponent, Sturgis, on Thursday at home at 5:30 p.m. The team then has a full slate on the weekend, playing away at Norfolk, before taking the home court for a rare Sunday game against Sacred Heart at 1p.m. After only two games in the past few weeks, the boys varsity team will need to shake off the cobwebs. The squad faces two of the three Lighthouse League members in the next week. Saturday, Provincetown takes the boat to the island for a 2:30 p.m. game and Tuesday the team travels to Sturgis. – L.W. |
