Molly Placek - Starlight Café
      The woman dressed as a bottle of cranberry Triple Eight vodka for Halloween last weekend while her friends dressed as the island distillery's orange, blueberry and vanilla vodkas. She also worked for a chemical company in Springfield, Mass. for three years before moving to the island.

Nature's Hearing Test
BIRDS OF NANTUCKET
      This bird was one of my mother's favorites, yet over the last years of her life she was unaware they were around. Like so many folks with "overly mature" hearing, she had lost sensitivity to the really high notes. When I took piano lessons as a child, most of the music I played used the notes clustered around the center of the keyboard.

This and That
      Hopefully, everyone set their clocks back an hour last Saturday night, despite the realization that the promise of an extra hour's sleep is a myth. Finally, a majority of the Historic District commission got real and we will not be burdened with the cost or visual blight arising from painting "Nantucket" in large letters on two sides of the new North Pasture water tower.

Fall planting and yard care
      If you think November is too late in the year to plant your garden, think again. Actually, this is an optimum time to put in perennials so their roots become established over the winter, and it is also a good time to dig in some shrubs and divide plants and bulbs so that your yard has a profuse display of your favorite varieties next season.

Beyond Cats and Dogs
      Mostly I write about dogs and sometimes I write about cats, which pretty much follows pet ownership trends nationwide. According to the 2009-10 National Pet Owners Survey, 62 percent of U.S. households own a pet, which translates to 71.4 million homes. Dog owners have the lion's share with 45.6 million homes, followed by 38.2 million households with cats.
