Denise Corson - Captain Tobey's
BY PETER B. BRACE INDEPENDENT WRITER
Captain Tobey's bartender Denise is the type of seasoned island bartender you want to meet when you sit down at Tobey's bar.
What are patrons ordering at Tobey's these days? What drinks are particularly hot at Tobey's right now and why?
People are loving the Triple-Eight Blueberry this year It's Triple-Eight Blueberry Vodka, lemonade and soda.
Why do you bartend here - what is the appeal of Tobey's and its atmosphere for practicing your craft?
I love my customers. We have a good mix of tourists and locals. We have a lot of people that love to come here and watch sports. I just love all of our regulars. I just love all of our customers. My bosses are awesome; they let us do what we do well and that style of work. They trust us to do a great job and we take care of our guests really well and that's what keeps people coming back.
What do you like to drink and why?
Tequila. It's delicious. I love all tequilas. I give them all a chance.
PHOTO BY PETER B. BRACE Where do you go for that drink when you're not on duty?
I love coming here on my nights off because there's football and I'm off Sunday and Monday nights, so I love to come in and watch football. I also like to go to Faregrounds because I love sports. If I'm really kickin' up my heels, I'll go to Corazon del mar and sample some of their finest tequilas.
What do you do when you're not bartending?
I love to ride my bike. I like to go snowboarding when I'm not on Nantucket. I took it real easy this year and, like I said, I spent most of my time going for bike rides, going for jogs, that kind of stuff. I like to be outside and do all kinds of stuff.
Do you have a favorite beach on the island?
I like all the beaches. That's one of the reasons that Nantucket is so amazing because you have a beach for every mood. If you want to be in public, you can go to Nobadeer; if you want to be by yourself, you can go to Miacomet; if you want to go and have fun, you can go to 40th [Pole]; you know, there's a beach for every mood on Nantucket, that's why I love it.
A patron is looking for the quintessential Tobey's experience, but only has time to sit at the bar and order from the bar menu. Which dish would you recommend, and what drink would you pair with it?
I'd suggest a Whale's Tail and some chicken wings. We have a group of local customers, so even if a tourist is here for one day, they can sit down with a Cisco and some chicken wings and blend in with everybody else. It's a very casual place. I love my chicken wings. I
