Nantucket (October 4, 2009) – Joan Fund, attorney for accused murderer Thomas E. Ryan, submitted several motions to the superior court as part of her defense of Ryan that were heard by a judge sitting on Nantucket last week during the fall superior court session. Among the motions was a petition opposing a district attorney’s office motion for a new DNA sample from Ryan, charged with the fatal stabbing of a fellow house painter, Scott Bernard, last March. Fund also requested that Ryan be moved from the Barnstable House of Correction where he is held without bail to a state institution, a motion objected to, mainly for the expense, by assistant district attorney Michael Trudeau. A third motion seeks the criminal history and records of Bernard’s behavior at various addresses between January 1 and March 6, 2009. The judge took those motions under advisement. His ruling on the other motions, primarily seeking documents, was unknown on Friday. More...

Nantucket (October 6, 2009) – Assistant town manager Malachy Rice resigned last week due to the “overly political nature of town counsel,” and his “unwillingness to adhere to the town counsel policy.” “In my almost two–year tenure with the Town, I have witnessed the Town receive conflicting and substandard legal advice that rather than solve problems creates problems,” wrote Rice in his letter of resignation. is not everyday that one gets to see three Olympic figure skaters perform at the Nantucket Ice Rink. Islanders filled the stands at the ice rink last Friday to see Dorothy Hamill, 1976 Olympic gold medalist (left), Peter Carruthers, 1984 Olympic silver medalist and Randy Gardner, 1979 Olympic gold medalist, skate along with the first class of the Dorthy Hamill gure skating fantasy camp (right). Hamill and her fellow Olympians shared the ice and their knowledge of skating with campers Liz Avery, Katie Brower, Jo-Anne Capobianco, Kristin Defrancisci, Midge Farkas, Mary Ferguson, Debbie Gordon, Cathy Janssen, Jorge DeLima, Billie O'Neel, Ruth Rahal and Wendi Williams. Although the show was in the cavernous ice rink, it had an intimate, "family living room" feel to it. More...
