Shorter school week for NES
      Students returning to Nantucket Elementary School this September could be returning to a shorter week, with early release at noon on Wednesdays. The Nantucket Teachers' Association voted 80 to 15 last Friday to support a plan that would give NES a four and a-half day school week in exchange for eliminating half days throughout the year.

Police help rescue baby from pool accident
      The life of a 14-month-old baby was saved on Friday because retired police sergeant David Aguiar happened to be listening to his scanner. Aguiar, who is now a reserve officer with the local police department, was off duty and driving on Cliff Road on Friday, July 17 at approximately 2:45 p.m.

Paul G. Crommelin, 86
OBITUARY
      Paul G. Crommelin, Jr., 86, of Willow Street, Pa. and a longtime summer resident of Nantucket died last week at the Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster, Pa. Born in Orange, N.J., he was the son of the late Paul G., Sr. and Florence Austin Crommelin. Paul was the husband of Mary Ann Cassady Crommelin. The Crommelins celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary last August.

Whaling Museum hosts children's "Hands-on-History" art program
      Although it was cloudy and overcast last Friday, Isabella Gemma was happily occupied at the Whaling Museum's summer Hands-on-History "Be a Collector" art activities sponsored by the Nantucket Historical Association. That day, Gemma was embellishing a tea cup with Chinese designs that she had seen in the museum's collection.
