Angela Paterson
      For 18-year-old Angela Paterson, setting and reaching goals brings satisfaction on many levels. As the alltime top scoring female basketball player in Nantucket history, Paterson is heading off to college in the fall, but will remain connected to her beloved island and family. Paterson is very close to her mother Kelly, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2005.

Firefighter injured in fall
      Firefighter Corey Ray was injured on duty last Thursday when he fell approximately 10 feet from the top of a truck while at a blaze on Shimmo Pond Road. Fire Chief Mark McDougall said his crew was battling a debris fire in a construction Dumpster at 23 Shimmo Pond Road when a call came in at 9:15 a.m.

Richard 'Dick' Freed
      Richard "Dick" Freed of Cocoa Beach, Fla., West Haven, Conn. and formerly of Nantucket died on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 at Connecticut Hospice Hospital. He was 79. Mr. Freed was born in Newark, N.J. on July 27, 1929 son of the late Sam and Catherine Lynch Freed.

      I believe the School Committee can do more than adopt policies in an effort to make the elementary school a "performing" school. For example, I would work to ensure that we have strong, professional and committed leadership in all administrative positions. From there, we can re-emphasize some basic, core educational values.

      The elementary school's current placement in corrective action is because of test scores, but the test scores are a result of poor curriculum development, lack of consistent curriculums, and lack of professional development for the teachers, to name a few.

      Frankly, the only power the School Committee has is hiring and firing the superintendent. The School Committee, through the superintendent, could insist that the principal and others serving in administrative capacities, for example, reading and mathematics supervisors, et cetera, implement a curriculum focused on consistency on each grade level.

      The School Committee has committed the necessary funding to move forward with corrective action plans as outlined by the state. Principal John Miller of NES has recently taken the first major step to ensure that the corrective actions taken will have a poignant and lasting effect by taking a group of NES teachers off island to vist an estimable public elementary school.

Adult Day Center gets year's reprieve
      The collective sighs of relief from many local families were almost audible across the island when the selectmen voted unanimously to keep the Adult Community Day Center open for another year by covering its $130,000 budget with a reserve fund transfer.

Two Nantucketers started hiking Appalachian Trail in early March
      Stephanie Mosscrop began hiking the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail (AT) on March 1, not because she needed to jumpstart her life or take a break between careers. Native Nantucketer Chad Walsh is trying to move past a bad segment of his life and leave a painful relationship loss in his hiking wake.

Town Meeting voters to decide on health board petition
      Instead of deciding on Curtis Barnes' citizen's article to establish a separate Board of Health, Town Meeting voters will vote on the proposal as a Home Rule Petition. The Board of Selectmen last week voted 4 to 1 to approve creation of an appointed health board, as Barnes suggested, that would operate independently of the selectmen who currently serve in that capacity.

      Rebecca Weld will discuss "Building Green on Nantucket" at the noon Food for Thought Series Thursday, March 19, in the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad St. Free admission; bring your lunch. Weld, who graduated at the top of her class with a bachelor's degree in architecture from Tulane University in New Orleans, began her career in upstate New York.

Comment period on Reis recycling business ends March 25
      The Board of Selectmen agreed unanimously last week they were satisfied Reis Trucking will adhere to necessary safeguards and standards regarding its recycling operation at 30 Bunker Road. On March 4, Reis Trucking received a draft approval from the Department of Environmental Protection for a proposed small recycling operation.
