Chamblis Award winners
      Nantucket 8th grade science teacher Peg Davidson won the prestigious Chambliss Award at this year's meeting of the American Astronomical Society. Davidson co-authored with Lauren Weiss, a student at Harvard University, a research paper on the brightness of StarV3798SGR.

Man stabbed in stomach during fight in mid-island home
      An El Salvadorian man is being held on $50,000 cash bail for allegedly stabbing another man in the stomach with a knife on Wednesday night during a fight in a mid-island home. According to police, Alvaro A. Navarro, 34, of El Salvador was arrested for stabbing Jesus Sola, 23, at a Sea Fox Circle residence, where Navarro was staying.

Calarco named assistant treasurer of the Artists Association

Phyllis Berman
      P hyllis Berman of Pound Ridge, N. Y. and Nantucket died at the age of 72 on February 19, 2009 after a long and remarkable battle with pancreatic cancer. She died at her home in Pound Ridge. Phyllis was the only child born to Dorothy and Walter Back. She grew up in Park Ridge, N. J. and graduated from Park Ridge High School.

Philippe Stephen Eric Schreiber
      Philippe Stephen Eric Schreiber of Nantucket, formerly of New York City and Fairfield, Conn., died Saturday, February 14, 2009, from heart disease. He was 68 years old. He was born in London, England and moved to New York City as a child where his father, Marc Schreiber, had a long career with the United Nations.

Poor economy deters local candidates
      T oo preoccupied with the recession or intimidated by experienced incumbents and time commitments, fewer Nantucketers are pitching campaigns for the many vacancies on town boards this year. There is little bewilderment among members of town government over this year's poor showing for the election.

Oldest House and Sankaty Light contenders for U.S. quarter
      Imagine eyeing the handful of quarters you are about to feed into a soda machine and noticing Nantucket's Oldest House or Sankaty Head Lighthouse on the tail side of one of the quarters. For the last 10 years, the U.S. Mint has been producing quarters with historic state landmarks stamped by molds onto the B sides of its second largest U.S. currency coins.
