The Burying Ground
      A n elderly cousin once lived across from the Old Gaol on Vestal Street. She was one of the last vestiges of the year-round Quaker community, although like many others of that ilk, she had partially turned her back on her religion in favor of the bright lights and sweet music of the Episcopal Church.

February Vacation Week
      On Nantucket, the last week of February is school vacation week. With the public schools closed, it is a time for families to spend more time together. Often, there are standby lists for cars loaded with Nantucketers trying to get on the ferry and off the island. For those staying here it is usually a fact that very few businesses will be open.

BIRDS OF NANTUCKET
      R ecently the Sunday birders sat at breakfast and recounted their sightings. People ooohed and ahhhed about the two handsome Blackheaded Gulls we saw, with their red legs and two-tone bills. Then the subject of Harlequin Ducks came up, how they would all dive at once and leave you wondering if you had really seen them.
