Davis promoted to President, COO at GateHouse Media Inc.
     FAIRPORT, N.Y., January 8, 2009 - GateHouse Media, Inc. announced today the appointment of Kirk A. Davis as president and chief operating officer. GateHouse Media is the parent corporation of The Nantucket Independent. Davis previously served as president and chief executive officer of GateHouse Media New England. In his new role, Davis will be responsible for setting the strategic direction and overseeing all operations of GateHouse's 92 daily publications, more than 285 weekly publications and 260 locally focused web sites.

      When islander Tim Madden is sworn in today at the State House, he will become the first state representative from Nantucket in more than 30 years. In 1978, the state was redistricted and Nantucket lost its seat on Beacon Hill and became part of the Cape and Islands district.

Christmas Bird Count yields hoary redpoll, 134 species in all
      Through light morning rain and dense afternoon fog, 43 island birders counted 134 avian species on Dec. 27, Nantucket's Christmas Bird Count day. Among them were a cattle egret, a hoary redpoll, four snowy owls and a peregrine falcon named Quest fitted with a satellite transmitter.
