The Bird's Eye
      When I looked out the window this morning, it was with the hope that I would see something different. I am not sure what I expected. Maybe it would be a blanket of new snow. Better still, perhaps I would see palm trees that would indicate that the cold weather of the last few weeks was really just a bad dream.

Downtown Nantucket
      With no advance notice, my brother appeared on island for a few hours this past Friday. He had been traveling the east coast with a friend and thought he'd pop over to say hello. At first I felt a bit of a panic thinking there wouldn't be much to do downtown in January, but I was pleasantly surprised.

      I nsulation - that's what you need if you are on Nantucket at this time of year. A few weeks ago I was out with some beginning birders looking at the ducks in Nantucket Harbor. One lady commented, "I guess these ducks will all be heading south soon." "No," I said, " These ducks (Buffleheads) just arrived. This is 'south' to them.
