In what will certainly be a feast for the eyes, this Food for Thought will showcase images from both photographers' vast collections, interspersed with interesting stories and reflections on taking photographs—both on island and in America. Hazlegrove moved to Nantucket from Roanoke, Virginia, in 1978. She spent her early years on Nantucket cleaning houses, waitressing, baking, scalloping and, most important, photographing every aspect of her life on Nantucket. Her photographic work is now widely published in magazines, books and advertising campaigns, both in the U.S. and abroad. Books illustrated with her photography have been published by Chronicle Books, including "Nantucket: Seasons on the Island" and "Nantucket: The Quiet Season." Just this week she delivered her newest book project to Chronicle, to be published in the early spring of 2010. Rob Benchley has accrued many credits since moving to the island year-round in 1982. His photography has been seen in The New York Times, Boston Globe, Cape Cod Times, and Nantucket Magazine. Locally, he has been a staff photographer and writer for the Inquirer & Mirror, the Nantucket Beacon, and more recently The Nantucket Independent. In 1999, Rob teamed with author Jim Patrick to create "Scallop Season: A Nantucket Chronicle," documenting through interviews and photographs a commentary on the once-great New England fishing industry surviving on Nantucket. His photographs were also featured in Peter Brace's informative nature guide "Walking Nantucket" and in the 'Sconset Trust's 2004 publication about longtime residents of 'Sconset, "Voices of a Village."
