12 p.m. NHA'S Food for Thought Series

The Nantucket Historical Association presents Tom Larrabee Jr., who will discuss "Nantucket's Cranberry Harvest." The bog east of Gibbs pond has been producing cranberries commercially since 1857. Purchased in 1968 by Roy Larsen, Arthur Dean, and Walter Beinecke Jr. and donated to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, Inc. — with the stipulation that the land continue to be cultivated as cranberry bogs — the 250-acre bog area off the Milestone Road, and another 37 acres of organic bogs off the Polpis Road, keep the Nantucket Conservation Foundation particularly busy at this time of year. A fourth-generation Nantucket native and island farmer, Larrabee grew up on the bogs where his dad workes; his first job as a young teenager was mowing the grass around the bogs. After graduating from Nantucket High, he spent four years with the U.S. Marine Corps and worked for a number of years as a ferryboat captain in Hilton Head, S.C., and Boston. In 2002 he moved back to his birthplace and began working for the Conservation Foundation, where he is currently assistant manager of the cranberry bogs. He will discuss the process of wet-picking vs. dry-picking, and what happened to the 15,000 pounds of cranberries that were dry-harvested this season. Free to the public. Bring your lunch. Whaling Museum, 13 Broad St. For additional information call 228-1894, ext. 0, or visit www.nha.org. 4 p.m. Beach Management Advisory Committee Land Bank Conference Room. Thursdays.
