EDITORIAL While this horse may already be irretrievably out of the barn, let's do what we can to make sure that gold-plated taxi medallions minted by local government do not make their way from Manhattan Island to Nantucket Island. With our Board of Selectmen - at a judge's insistence - considering again John Grangrade's request to transfer his four taxi licenses with the sale of his business, we foresee an ominous trend that strikes at the heart of the age-old waiting list for a taxi license. If you're done using that taxi license, turn it in, and we'll award it to someone who has waited their turn. The last thing this island needs is a Nantucket Taxi Medallion, a highly valuable asset created by the Town for the private gain of a select few. Let's hope it's not too late to close the barn door before the next horse gets out. |
