"Uh-oh!"

BY RACHEL ISADORA

A new book for toddlers by an award-winning author and illustrator who has delighted child audiences for decades, "Uh-oh!" features brightly colored pastel illustrations and follows a toddler though the day. Single words or phrases showing daily items in the little one's life, such as "breakfast" and "crayons" are followed by a typical toddler mess on the next page, overwritten with the exclamation, "Uh-oh!" This story narrative and the delightful pictures will resonate with toddlers and their parents alike.

"Free-Range Chickens"

BY SIMON RICH

I have come across very few books in my lifetime that make me laugh out loud while I am reading them. I am not talking about a lilting hee-heehee - I am talking full out guffawing that would embarrass you if you were not so engrossed in what you were reading. "Free-Range Chickens" is one such book. If you read "Ant Farm," Rich's first book, you probably have thrown the paper to the floor and are racing down Main Street on your way to the bookstore to pick up this his long-awaited second book. Just for the record: we do not open until 9:30 a.m. For those of you who are not familiar with Rich, do not despair. Rich is a graduate of Harvard University, where he was the president of The Harvard Lampoon. "Ant Farm" was published as he was graduating last year. His books consist of small vignettes, glimpses into life as seen through the eyes of this zany author. Rich has the talent to take a simple situation, like being late for curfew and turning it into "How my mother imagined the police," a twopage script worthy of vintage "Saturday Night Live." For those of us who cannot wait until his third book comes out, I have good news. Rich has begun writing for the beleaguered late night show. I'm sure John Belushi is smiling.
