Democratic condenders for Eric Turkington's State Rep. seat
Dan Larkosh West Tisbury 1. My career has been about helping people. I have the dedication needed to serve the district. As a progressive Democrat, I will fight for the needs of our communities. Nantucket deserves an advocate who will listen to people's concerns and represent them on Beacon Hill. 2. A healthy environment is especially vital to island residents. I am the only candidate who supports Cape Wind, which will make us national leaders in offshore wind power. It will help stabilize prices and provide jobs for our youth. Reducing toxic chemicals and nitrogen in our ponds, streams, estuaries and watersheds is another priority.
3. I have stood up for working people, small businesses and the environment. These legal cases have brought me before boards of selectmen, zoning boards of appeal, planning boards and in every courthouse in our district. 4. I grew up on the islands and will work hard for Nantucket. I will make myself available to the person on the street and to town committees and meetings. 5. I have been a trial lawyer and mediator for 17 years. I worked myself through law school with a small business. I know it will take a team approach to deliver for the district. I have already forged alliances with Representatives Cleon Turner and Matt Patrick. Tim Lasker
1. Because I think it's time to give back to the community that I love so much. 2. Nantucket needs cost effective transportation to and from the mainland for both passengers and freight. It needs to protect its environment by combating overdevelopment, ensuring proper wastewater controls and increasing its use of sustainable energy. Finally, it needs to ensure that its public school curriculum educates children for a global marketplace. 3. I currently sit on the Chilmark Planning Board and the Affordable Housing Committee. In 2006 I cochaired Deval Patrick's campaign on Martha's Vineyard. 4. The Barnstable-Dukes-Nantucket district is an unusual one - geographically disparate and heterogeneous in its needs. Its representative must be a thinker who can understand each region on its own terms, while simultaneously grasping the shared structural challenges of communities with boom and bust cycles, with wealthy summer visitors and struggling middle class year-round residents. I am one. 5. My background is in the high tech industry, working with multinational corporations. I have spent my career figuring out how to make huge bureaucratic organizations more efficient and receptive to the needs of their various constituents - more user friendly, if you will. I think these same skills should be brought to bear on state government. Many citizens right now feel a sense of alienation from their own state government; feel frustration with its stagnancy and inability to address their basic needs. We need really creative thinking and consensus building to remedy this, and that's what I think I can offer as State Representative.
Nantucket 1. After 20 years serving as our representative, Eric Turkington decided not to seek re-election. Having worked with him for the past decade at the State House as our legislative liaison, it seemed a natural next step for me. I believe I have been effective as the legislative liaison and find the work very rewarding. This is an opportunity to play an even more important role and I'm excited about it. It is very important that we have a strong "Voice in Boston." 2. In the immediate future, we face the slow-down in the economy and the increased cost of goods and services. This could make for some tough years ahead. Government will have to be more efficient, while still providing basic services. Recruiting and retaining professionals such as nurses, teachers and veterinarians is critical. As construction slows down we need to find other ways to grow our economy and work to maintain our tourist industry. We need to protect what makes Nantucket such a special place to live. 3. Legislative Liaison since 1998, Board of Selectman and County Commission, Chair, Land Bank Commissioner, Planning and Economic Development Commission, Harbor Planning Committee, 1993, Civic League, President of Polpis Association, Zoning Board of Appeals, Town Meeting Moderator (Alternate), Town and County Charter Committee, Vice Chairman. 4. I will continue, as I have in the past, to work closely with the legislators and our local officials to promote Nantucket's issues at the State House. I will remain involved locally, and will listen to and be straightforward with the people of Nantucket. I'll work with other towns in the district to share ideas and join together whenever possible. 5. My 10 years of experience working at the State House with Representative Turkington will be invaluable. I am familiar with the legislative process and with the various political figures in Boston. I work well with people and feel as if I have a knack for understanding the larger picture. I realize that to get things done requires patience and persistence, and being realistic in your expectations. I believe the goal of government should be to ensure that the quality of life in our communities is always improving for the next generation. Roger Wey Oak Bluffs 1. It is my deep sense of commitment to the communities of Falmouth, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket for their social, environmental and financial needs that leads me, at this time, to run for election to this very important state level office. 2. Conserving water quality, remediation of nutrient loading in Madaket Harbor, inclusion in the legislation of the Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan, increased wastewater systems, alternative wind energy projects such as a partnership between Nantucket and Edgartown, more affordable year-round rentals, more success stories of affordable housing programs, like Fernella Phillips, activities for island youth, programs for substance abuse and suicide prevention, support Home Rule such as local county sheriffs and increased services and programs for seniors such as fuel assistance. 3. Town of Oak Bluffs, Mass. - Board of Selectmen, 21 years, present member and former chairman, Dukes County Mass. Board of Commissioners, 8 years, presently member and vice chairman Martha's Vineyard Commission, Dukes County Charter Commission, Town of Oak Bluffs Council on Aging director, Dukes County Retirement Board, union member - American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, retired member - Local 33 United Brotherhood of Carpenters, race director and founding member of road races that benefit: Hospice of Martha's Vineyard, Affordable Housing, the NAACP Freedom Fund and the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging Fuel Assistance Fund. 4. Throughout my years in public office, I have dealt with an assortment of problems facing all of us in a consistent way - listening to all sides of the issue - considering all the implications and consequences - making decisions that I believe are the right ones to make and that respect the interests and needs of the people I have been elected to serve. 5. My most compelling credential is my 21 years of experience and commitment with the communities of Falmouth, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. I will advocate on the voters' behalf and help bring solutions to the many challenges that face our coastal communities. - PS I |
