Hidden Treasure

A re you looking for an in-town pied-a`-terre that is convenient to just about everything? Are you looking for an investment property with an excellent rental history? Are you looking for a historic Nantucket cottage that has been carefully modernized? Are you looking for a place that is easy to care for? Are you looking for a place that is ready to move into?

If any of these criteria are on your shopping list, then you must visit 8 South Beach Street. If all of them are on your list, then bring your checkbook with you when you come for a tour.

When you arrive, you note that the neighborhood is in the middle of a major upgrade. Hidden behind a high, thick, privet hedge, the cottage beckons you. Going up the brick walk, you are amazed to find such a quiet spot in the middle of what, at least in the summer, is a busy part of town.

Entering the front door, the warmth and coziness of the house invites you to enter. You immediately feel at home in the traditional open plan which greets you.

The brick chimney in the center of the room serves as a natural divider of the space. To your right is the living area with its L-shaped sofa and to your left are the dining table and some comfortable chairs.

The kitchen extends along much of the back of the room, with the sink under the window, the stove to the rear

of the chimney and the refrigerator built in to the handmade,

oak cabinets across from the stove. At the left rear, with the same motif carried through from the kitchen, there is a built-in desk. The rear walls at the back of the kitchen and the desk area, are both done in small, ocean green tiles that were installed piece by piece to create a mosaic effect.

After checking everything out on the main floor, you go upstairs, where you find two bedrooms. One has a double bed; the other has space for both a double bed and an additional, over-flow, single bed. The upstairs bathroom is large and bright with a blue, large Mexican tile floor, a whirlpool tub and a very chic sink.

But wait a minute. This house is supposed to have three bedrooms and two baths. Where is the third bedroom? It is not upstairs and there is no basement. There is no door to another room visible on the ground floor. What did you miss?

You go back downstairs and eventually find the magic door; one of the kitchen cabinet panels actually opens up to reveal the doorway to the master bedroom. At the rear of the house, this room, with its built-in bedside tables and double closets, is a perfect hideaway. A door also leads from the master bedroom to the small, rear patio.

The master bath includes a large, glass enclosed shower with floor-to-ceiling tiling similar to that found in the kitchen and an unusual copper-lined sink that matches the color of these tiles. Access to the house's mechanical room is through the master bath.

The house is fully air conditioned and has town water and sewer. The beautiful front and side lawn have an irrigation system. The roof and sidewall shingles were new in 2007. Historic District Commission approval that would enable vertically expanding the second floor living space is pending.

This centrally located, three bedroom, two bath cottage, so close to town, Children's Beach and the Jetties, and so perfect for personal use or for renting, is offered fully furnished for $2,250.000. I
