Upcoming Old South Wharf Stroll continues a tradition

The only strings attached to the upcoming Old South Wharf Stroll will be the ones on a guitar played by roving performer Jason Sullivan, an acoustic guitar player who will wander the wharf during the evening event to entertain visitors.

The Old South Wharf Stroll, which began more than two decades ago, will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 17 as a way to introduce people to the artists, craftsmen and merchants who have their shops, studios and galleries along this historic harborfront way. When the stroll first started, there were many more art galleries, specialty shops and boutiques on the wharf, but that has changed over the years as some closed and others relocated into the core of downtown.

"This is just to get in touch with the fact that we are here. It's a beautiful, peaceful place to be, outside of the hubbub of town," said sculptor Willi Tobias.

Before running her own gallery, Tobias showed for five years at South Wharf Gallery, which has since moved to India Street.

Studios and shops will offer visitors snacks and beverages, such as wine and cheese, cookies, pretzels and more. Tobias said almost everyone on the wharf will be open during the event hours. Painters Debbie Sosebee, Kathy Kelliher, Helen Sharpe Potter and Tobias will be working on their art for the public to see and learn about during the process.

Others doing business on Old South Wharf include: little miss drama jewelry, Peter England Knits, Brown Basket Gallery, Vicomte Arthur sports clothing, Hostetler Gallery, Slip 14 restaurant, Evans Sculpture, Eleanor Duffy coats, Posh jewelers, The Scrimshander Gallery, Gallery Blue and Emilly Brooke Rubin jewelry and belongings.
