12 - 12:30 p.m. Nantucket Cobbletones in concert The Nantucket Cobbletones sing in the Thursday Noonday Concert Series. This group of young men perform a repertoire of doo-wop music, some with choreography, and are always entertaining and harmonious, and can be seen every weekend in front of Zero Main Street but rarely perform in a concert setting. Their past concerts at the Unitarian Church have been very well attended, and the acoustics of the church add even more ring to their harmonies. The group has been singing for many years now, but always with a slightly different mix of voices, depending on who is on-island each summer, and who the latest, newest, youngest additions are to the group. In recent years the doo-wop a cappela style has become a popular musical style for young singers, and the groups trade repertoire with each other and swap arrangements. A cappella contests are all the rage. This group includes members of the Naturals, Nantucket's High School a cappella young men's group, and Nantucketers who have gone on to study music in colleges and bring their repertoire back with them in the summers. Admission is $5 at the door. Unitarian Church, Orange Street.

8 p.m. Author Talk: Bill Patten Bill Patten grew up in the heart of privileged society to American parents - a debutante mother, a diplomatic father - stationed in Europe. When Bill was 12 years old, his father, William Patten, died, and his mother remarried the renowned columnist Joe Alsop. Patten was swept into Washington during the Kennedy years, where he bore witness to his stepfather's legendary power-brokering, and watched a very different father figure at work. In 1996, when he was 47 years old, Patten learned that his biological father was not William Patten, but the noted English diplomat, Duff Cooper. In this quest to know his triumvirate of fathers, Bill Patten offers an unforgettable memoir. My Three Fathers is a search for identity - and a chronicle of a fascinating bygone era of American aristocracy. Sponsored with Bookworks. Free. Nantucket Atheneum Great Hall

8 p.m. Author Talk: John Burnham Schwartz
From Publishers Weekly. Schwartz bases his finely wrought fourth novel ("The Commoner")on the life of Empress Michiko of Japan, the first commoner to marry into the Japanese imperial family. Haruko Tsuneyasu grows up in postwar rural Japan and studies at Sacred Heart University, where she excels - particularly and fatefully - at tennis, which provides her entrée to the crown prince, whom she handily beats in an exhibition match. After more meetings on and off the court, the prince asks Haruko to marry him. Persuaded by their mutual attraction and by assurances that the break with tradition will usher in a modern era, Haruko ultimately agrees, against her father's wishes, to become the first commoner turned royal. But, as her father had feared, her freedom and ambition suffer under the stifling rituals of court life. $20. The audience excites a demand that inspires the musician to reach beyond the dimensions of their ability to satisfy the listener. This is World Premier Band. WPB incorporates musicians with endless imaginations seeding the music of the 90's and today with funk, dance, originals and R&B. After playing The Box for over 20 years WPB will return just this once so come out and try to keep up with the radical dance moves of Jiggy and The World Premier Band.
July 18 & 19 Tramps Like Us No look alike's, impersonators, costumes or gimmicks here... Just a remarkable musical tribute to Springsteen & his "E" Street Band. Great musicianship and a great sound. I've seen several Springsteen tribute bands over the years, all of which seem to focus more on looking, and acting like Springsteen and his band, rather than performing the music as Springsteen and his band would. This is the best sounding Springsteen tribute band of the bunch. If you're a Springsteen fan, like myself, go check out Tramps Like Us... you won't be disappointed. - Scott Hirsch / Director of Development - VH-1
