for the Arts record Robert Frazier to exhibit at Old Spouter on July 5 Robert Frazier, director of the Artists' Association of Nantucket and a painter, will open a new exhibit at the Old Spouter Gallery on Orange Street on July 5 that features a number of impressionistic works focusing on a shifting perspective on Nantucket landscape painting. The exhibit will include Frazier's paintings, incorporating his trademark cloud formations. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Frazier shares the show with Howard Fraker, who is a woodcut artist. Meridian Galleries hosts new work The Meridian Galleries on Washington Street displays the work of many fine coastal and landscape artists in the northeast and from Maine to Florida, with several painters known locally. Meridian's new Nantucket gallery represents a diverse group of artists. Two recent paintings by Lisa Horrigan include the Beetle Cat Regatta and Blue Lavendar Sail Nantucket. Other new work has arrived for display from Stapleton Kearns, Yasemin Tomakan and Joann Ballinger. Children's art camps start July 7 at AAN Art camps for children begin July 7 at the Artists' Association of Nantucket, led by John Carruthers. The camps, which will run weekly through August 22, are geared to children age six-to-13 and will focus on drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and quick-dry clay work, along with other art subjects. Tomorrow, July 3, the AAN is hosting a free Kids' Arts Day when children and their parents may learn more about what the camps will offer. The event will take place at the AAN workshop at 1 Gardner Perry Lane from 10 to 12 a.m. with special guest Nadine Westcott, a muralist and children's book illustrator, who will be available for book signings. The camps include art materials, cost $203 for AAN member's children and $225 for non-members, and are scheduled in two parts according to age. 'Sconset in the spotlight From 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, "'Sconset Night" will open at the Whaling Museum, revolving around the eastern end village's history, architecture and personalities living there. Free for Nantucket Historical Association members; $10 admission for members of the 'Sconset Trust or 'Sconset Civic Association; $15 for the general public. Sosebee Studio and Gallery opens on Old South Wharf Debbie Sosebee has opened her new art gallery on Old South Wharf, taking over the space formerly occupied by The Mielko Gallery. The building has been renovated and Sosebee has added new artists, including Victoria Harvey, Barbara Capizzo, Barbara Peavey, Jack Eastmen Brown, who is Sosebee's late father and Debbie Anderson, a jeweler. The gallery will be a working studio where Sosebee paints daily and will also host painting demonstrations by her gallery's artists through the summer. NHA research library hall will show Nantucket's Presidential Documents At 3 p.m. today, the entrance hall at the Nantucket Historical Association Research Library will begin a display of "Presidential Documents: From Washington to Franklin Roosevelt." In recognition of a national presidential election year, the NHA is hosting an exhibition of documents in its collection, including the appointment of the Inspector of the Revenue of Ports for Nantucket, signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and other documents including ships' papers signed by James Madison, John Tyler, James Polk and Franklin Pierce. |
