OBITUARIES
Olive "Oggy" Coolidge Butman, 88, of Lexington, Mass. and a long-time summer resident, died Friday, May 23, at Pine Knoll Nursing Center in Lexington.

Olive "Oggy" Coolidge Butman
Born on January 26, 1920, in Medford, Mass., to Ruth Dame and Richard Bradford Coolidge, Oggy attended Medford High School and graduated from Wellesley College in 1941. She married Robert Butman, whom she had known since third grade, on August 29, 1942.

Until her illness, Oggy spent part of every summer of her life at the family home on Hinckley Lane, filling her days with sunning and swimming at beaches on the north shore; surfing and hosting family picnics at the south shore; picking blueberries and teaching children and grandchildren to make beach plum jelly and walking the moors. Oggy would take her first swim in April and her last in October. She reveled in dinners made up of island-grown vegetables, freshly caught fish and blueberries from the moors.

She learned to sail on Nantucket and sailed its waters all her life . A daring and accomplished skipper, she always loved a fresh wind and a new destination. She particularly enjoyed sailing out the jetties and about Nantucket Harbor in a stiff southwest breeze, often passing close astern of visiting yachts, to their owners' consternation and surprise. In later years, she spent many summers sailing in Penobscot Bay and further east along the coast of Maine.

Oggy cared deeply about protecting Nantucket's open land and was active in Nantucket affairs and helped to found the Hinckley Lane Association. She saved the lane from paving by lying down in front of a bulldozer. To this day, Hinkley Lane remains unpaved.

In 1952, Oggy and Bob, with their three children, moved to Concord, Mass. In 1968, Oggy earned her masters degree in education from Tufts University. She served the Littleton Public School system as a guidance counselor from 1968 through 1984.

Oggy leaves her husband Robert Butman of Concord; her brother William Bradford Coolidge of Bethesda, Maryland; her daughter Marcia Butman and husband Toby Sackton, of Lexington, Mass.; her sons Dr. Bradford Butman, of Falmouth, Mass. and John Butman and wife Nancy, of Concord, Mass.; six grandchildren and many friends and relatives.

A memorial service will be held Monday , June 9 at 10:30 A.M. at the First Parish Church, 20 Lexington Road, in Concord. A reception at 55 Holdenwood Road, Concord, will follow the service.

Luis A. "Uncle Louie" Cardoza, 75, of Plympton, Mass. and Nantucket, died Friday, May 23 in Tobey Hospital after a period of failing health.

He was the son of Louisa A. Gaspar of New Bedford, Mass. and John Cardoza of West Falmouth, Mass.
