RACK 'EM UP!
Field Notes

Madaket Marine is nearly halfway there in getting local permits to expand the boatyard's storage and slip facilities. The marina has permission from the Historic District Commission, but still needs approval from the Conservation Commission.

At the May 20 HDC meeting, Madaket Marine secured the commission's approval to reconfigure its boat slips and dock and pier system, and demolish a three-level boat storage rack. But to proceed with its expansion, Madaket Marine needs permission from the ConCom.

The plan before the ConCom is for a reconfiguration of the marina's existing boat storage racks, the addition of three new racks, more parking and increasing the existing 60-slip footprint from 5,214 square feet to 7,212 square feet.

The new storage racks would accommodate 54 boats, including the 27 which are stored on the ground during the winter.

The Hither Creek boatyard returns to the ConCom today to continue its public hearing at 4 p.m. in the conference room of the Town Annex building at 37 Washington Street.

WATCHING PAINT DRY DEPARTMENT If you are an engineer, builder, attorney or environmentalist and you are plugged into the Conservation Commission, be at today's regular ConCom meeting, which will feature a public hearing on proposed revisions to the Wetlands Protection regulations.

Though not sweeping, wetland-life changes, these revisions equal a year's worth of suggestions and recommendations from the commission and those who find themselves before this board.

The changes are in all sections of the General Provisions, Regulations For Coastal Wetlands, Regulations for Inland Wetlands, Activities in the Buffer Zone and Activities to Enhance Wetlands Resource Health and Function sections of Nantucket's wetlands bylaw.

This hearing is part of the commission's regular meeting on June 4, which musters at 4 p.m. in the conference room of the Town Annex building at 37 Washington Street.

CORRECTION In last week's issue of The Nantucket Independent, it was incorrectly reported that the Linda Loring Nature Foundation is cutting nature trails and building duck blinds around the North Head of Hummock Pond.

The trails will be cut along the shores of the North Head of Long Pond and the blinds are for viewing and not for hunting. The Foundation has not yet established hours the property will be

open to the public. I
