A revised version of a bill seeking state control over Massachusetts County Sheriff’s budgets has been filed by Governor Deval Patrick with Nantucket excluded from the bill.
“We’ll keep rolling the way we have been,” said Nantucket County Sheriff Richard Bretschneider. “I will be the last county sheriff.”
Patrick’s deputy press secretary Becky Deusser confirmed the bill had been resubmitted and Nantucket would keep local control of the budget, which is generated by deeds excise taxes. She said all spending would still have to be approved by the County Government Finance Review Board.
