Likes most about Nantucket The sunsets and beaches.

Likes least about Nantucket The cost of living and the spiders.

Favorite TV show "Two and A Half Men" All of Nantucket Bank's employees are pleasant to do business with, and Desarae Medeiros at the bank's Amelia Drive branch is no exception. A relative newcomer to the island, she has an interesting story about how she ended up living in and loving a place she had never heard of before early 2007.

Born in New Bedford, Mass., Medeiros was raised there until she was two, then she and her mother spent about a year in St. Petersburg, Fla. before returning to New Bedford. She attended the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School where for four years she was a dietician's assistant. After graduation, Medeiros worked at an Applebee's restaurant in Fairhaven for four years, but wanted to become a model.

Medeiros compiled a photo portfolio and was invited to be in two Budweiser advertising promotions, but both were to be shot far from home and because the company did not provide travel expenses she had to turn down the opportunities. Though she still dreams of a modeling career, she also is interested in the real estate business and plans to take courses this fall.

At about the same time Medeiros was working in the Sovereign Bank's New Bedford corporate office (Sovereign is the parent company of Nantucket Bank) she "met" Nantucket native Jonathan Yarmy on myspace. Their relationship grew over the next few months, and last year he convinced her to move to the island.

"I had never even heard of Nantucket," she said. "I thought, 'Oh, you live on an island? That's so cool.' It's nice because it's so tiny you see everybody. It's not like offisland where you bump into somebody once in a blue moon, and everybody here is so nice and wants to help you out."

Once Medeiros decided to make the move - the first time she had lived away from her mother, who she considers her best friend - she needed a job. It just so happened that Nantucket Bank had openings, and since she was already familiar with how Sovereign Bank functions the opportunity at the local bank was a perfect fit.

In her free time, Medeiros enjoys the island's beaches, reading, writing poetry and confesses that she is addicted to shopping for shoes and handbags. A level headed young woman, she is in no rush to make serious life commitments, and rather, intends to save money so that she can buy a dependable, quality car, a home, and take a special vacation somewhere before settling down and thinking about raising a family.

"To just enjoy life and take it day by day," she said of her philosophy. "I believe in destiny and the signs. I believe in all that."

She also believes she was very lucky to have met Yarmy, who brightens her days.

"He definitely makes my heart skip a beat whenever I see him," she said. "He is definitely a guy who

can make you laugh." I
