Town seeks lower fees for construction, demolition trash
TOWN

No specific numbers are listed, but the town has sent a letter to Waste Options Nantucket, operator of the landfill, notifying the company that the town believes it is entitled to lower tipping fees for construction and demolition debris and a reduced charge for the construction and demolition processing building, plus a refund in both areas.

The refund would be retroactive to July 1, 2006 when a change in state regulations prohibited disposal of wood and other construction materials in state landfills. Since that time, Waste Options has been trucking the debris to mainland sites that are permitted to accept and dispose it.

On April 23, Town Manager Libby Gibson sent a letter to Waste Options indicating that a report done for the town by CommonWealth Resource Management Corporation found that the fees the town has been paying the company are higher than the costs of operation for Waste Options. The town currently pays $28,477.90 a month toward the cost of building the construction and demolition facility and $170.97 per ton for the tipping fee.

"The adjustment would be sought through discussions with Waste Options," said Gibson.

Acopy of the report was sent to Waste Options, but its President Whitney Hall declined to comment on its contents.

A representative of CommonWealth Resource Management was present at last Wednesday's selectmen's meeting to present its findings. The corporation was commissioned by the town to prepare

the report. I
