for the ARTS record

GET CREATIVE On Saturday, May 10, The Toy Boat on Straight Wharf will be open to offer free Mother's Day card kits to island children who want to create something unique and personal in a card for their mom that she will treasure and keep forever. Toy Boat owner Loren Brock will have her store open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, giving kids plenty of time to make a sweet and unusual card to give on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11.

MUSIC BENEFIT NEXT MONTH Nantucket is fortunate to have a vast number of nonprofit organizations that cater to the arts and human services, but with so many trying to encourage donations to keep them afloat, occasional schedule conflicts occur so it is best to announce fundraising plans ahead of time.

On Saturday, June 14, not too far off, the Nantucket School of Music will host trombonist Arthur Baron, once a member of the swinging Duke Ellington Orchestra, who will lead "The Duke's Men," an eight-piece jazz band performing at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Tickets for this lively evening to benefit the NCMC are already on sale at Mitchell's Book Corner, Dan's Pharmacy and through the NCMC office (call 228-3352). Reserved seats are $50, general admission seats are $35 and $25, and student seats are $10.

SEE HARVARD YARD The Nantucket Historical Association's next in the series of Explorations trips is a one-day excursion to Cambridge, Mass. and Harvard University. The trip will depart from Hyannis, via chartered bus, on Tuesday morning, June 10, at 9 a.m. Nina and Bob Hellman are the hosts.

Upon arriving in Cambridge, attendees will visit the Harvard Museum of Natural History, home to the worldrenowned Ware Collection of glass flowers, and an additional tour of its "Sea Creatures in Glass." After a leisurely lunch at the famous Grafton Street Pub & Grill, the group will take an entertaining walking tour - focusing on the history and architecture of Harvard Yard and concluding with a gallery tour of the highlights in the Fogg Art Museum, which opened to the public in 1895. Don't miss this opportunity to visit the Fogg, which will be closing for a five-year renovation at the end of June.

The bus returns to Hyannis in plenty of time to catch the evening boat, fast ferry, or plane. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from Hyannis.

The cost is $115 for NHA members; $135, nonmembers. Reservations are required. Please call Julie Kever for additional information, or to register. 508-228- 1894, ext. 0.

AUTISM SPEAKS DONATES BOOKS In recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, April 2nd, and April as National Autism Awareness Month, the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center donated over 100 books to island schools and child care centers.

"The Autism Acceptance Book: Being a Friend to Someone with Autism," by Ellen Sabin, and "Since We're Friends: An Autism Picture Book," by Celeste Shally and David Harrington, were donated to the Nantucket Elementary School, Nantucket Atheneum, Lighthouse School, Nantucket New School, Children's House, Small Friends, St. Paul's Nursery and Wee Whalers. "The Autism Awareness Book," which is accompanied by a Teacher's Guide, helps adults explain autism to children and explores how everyone is different, yet how important it is to accept one another's differences. "Since We're Friends" is a fiction book that promotes the importance and value of having a friendship with a child with autism.

The Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center has also purchased books and DVDs, which are available for parents, staff and the community to borrow. The books, which include fiction and nonfiction literature and are geared for children, teens and adults, cover many relevant topics, such as bullying issues, sibling concerns, social stories, Asperger's Syndrome, parenting and teaching a child on the spectrum, social skills training, celebrating differences and more. Kim Horyn, Director of the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center, has also asked the high school to add several books to its Independent Reading and Summer Reading lists.

NPT TO PRESENT AWARDS In celebration of National Preservation Month, the Nantucket Preservation Trust is pleased to announce a new Annual Preservation Awards Program to recognize and honor citizens' efforts to protect and restore Nantucket's historic resources.

The new program begins with a call for nominations from the public. The NPT hopes the program will generate interest in the private sector, as well as among real estate professionals and those in the building trades. Selection of awards will be made by a panel of judges from within the preservation community.

In announcing the awards, Susan Boardman, chair of NPT's Awards Committee, said the program is "an ideal way to recognize excellent preservation projects and preservation-minded individuals. We hope the awards also will shed light on proper preservation techniques, the importance of stewardship and even issues such as recycling."

This year's awards will be presented for two categories: "Preservation" and "Stewardship." The preservation award recognizes projects that focus on maintaining and sensitively repairing existing historic fabric while the stewardship award honors individual efforts to preserve historic buildings or an individual's overall contribution to historic preservation on-island. The 2008 awards are an outgrowth of last year's house marker awards, which recognized two preservation projects in 'Sconset: the restoration of the 'Sconset Post Office by Bernie and Carol Coffin, and Wolf's Head Cottage by Ginger Ivey.

NPT encourages nominations from members and the general public and welcomes the opportunity to assist you with your nomination. An awards nomination packet including a one-page nomination form and detailed information about the categories is available at the NPT office or by calling 228-1387. Deadline for submitting nominations is June 20. Awards will be presented following the NPT Annual

Meeting on July 25. I
