Nantucket Court Report

Astudent at Nantucket High School was arrested last Wednesday after he was allegedly found to be in possession of ecstasy and a number of prescription drugs while on school grounds.

Daniel Kurash, 18, of 7 Delaney Road, was arraigned in Nantucket District Court and charged with possession of a class B drug, ecstasy, and three counts of possession of a class E drug, which according to police, were Ritalin, Adarol and Alprazolam. Ritalin and Adarol are prescription drugs used to control behavioral problems such as attention deficit disorder, while Alprazolam is in the benzodiazepine class of drugs and is normally used to treat anxiety disorders.

According to the police report, Kurash was found to be in possession of ecstasy and school officials contacted the Nantucket Police Department, who found the additional drugs and then made the arrest. Detective Lt. Jerry Adams said it is not the first time he has heard of ecstasy being in the school and the drug is "familiar" to students there.

Kurash, who appeared in District Court with his parents, was not held and is free on personal recognizance and is due back in court on May 27 for a pretrial hearing.

Stephen N. Franklin, 27, of 8 Washaman Ave., had Oct. 6, 2006 charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and driving an uninsured motor vehicle, dismissed after paying all court cost.

Richard A. Hardy, 23, of 37 Tashma Lane, was arraigned on a May 5 charge of assault and battery and was ordered to return to court on May 27.

Emil P. Malfati, 38, of 12 Celtic Drive, had a May 2 charge of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license dismissed on payment of $100 in court costs.

Wilber Pena, 23, of 9 Nobadeer Farm Road, was arraigned on May 3 charges of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation and was ordered back to court on May 27.

Manuel Rojas, 39, of 133 Old South Road, was found to be in violation of his probation after being arrested on May 1 for disorderly conduct and had the conditions of his probation changed so that he is to remain drug and alcohol free and submit to random screenings.

SUPERIORCOURT

Emanual Moniz, 29, of Nantucket, plead guilty to a July 27, 2006 charge of distributing cocaine and was ordered to served six months in the Barnstable County House of Corrections. Moniez will also serve a year of supervised probation following his release and will have to remain drug and alcohol free and submit to random screenings. Moniez was arrested in 2006 in an undercover operation dubbed "operation bluefish."
