AT ITS MEETING ON APRIL 23, THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN:
There is no regular Board of Selectmen meeting tonight because it is the
fifth Wednesday of the month. The Board will meet this morning at 9:15 a.m. in the conference room at the Town Building for a special meeting to elect officers for both the Board of Selectmen and County Commissioners. • Approved a request by Town Clerk Catherine Flanagan Stover to designate the week of May 4 "Municipal Clerks Week."
• Approved a request by the Department of Public Works to designate April 25, "Arbor Day on Nantucket."
• Approved a request by the Traffic Safety Work Group to place a stop sign and crosswalk at the intersection of Salem and Washington streets.
• Heard a report by Town Manager Libby Gibson on the status of the fiscal year 2006 and 2007 financial audits, which she said were still being completed.
• Heard a departmental overview of the Marine Department.
• Voted to officially designate the cemetery at Mill Hill as the "Colored Cemetery" and officially named the "Founder's Cemetery." Town Counsel had recommended adding "Historic" before the name "Colored Cemetery," but the stakeholders had voiced their displeasure with including the term "historic" because they felt it was caving to political correctness and the board agreed.
