KELLY NAMED DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES George Kelly, who has served as Nantucket High School (NHS) principal for the past four years, will become Nantucket Public Schools (NPS) Director of Student Services, a newly created position on July 1, 2008. In his new role Kelly will continue to report directly to Dr. Robert Pellicone, Superintendent of Schools.

As Director of Student Services, Kelly will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining a safe, healthy and supportive environment within the school system for the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of NPS students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12. Utilizing leadership, advocacy and collaboration, he will be responsible for fostering student success, providing preventive services and responding to identified student needs.

Kelly will also be responsible for coordinating services within the District and serving as a liaison with all of the outside agencies that serve NPS. He will work closely with the Student Assistance Program (SAP), once it is established, that will be provided through Nantucket Behavioral Health Services.

"From my vantage point as NHS principal, I've seen gaps in and a lack of student support services and have been working with administration to create a way to fulfill this need," said Kelly. "Some departments have been overwhelmed with the number of responsibilities they've had to undertake."

"Though I've greatly enjoyed my time as NHS principal I feel that I can make a significant impact in this new position and am grateful that I'm able to address needs which we've identified in the system," he added.

"This position is a great fit for George's considerable talents and interests in dealing directly with the NPS student body," said Dr. Pellicone. "We expect that he will continue to play an important role in the school district as he has as NHS principal."

JUST THE FACTS In a "Business Note" in last week's Inquirer and Mirror on the acquisition of The Nantucket Independent by GateHouse Media, it was incorrectly reported that The Independent made the decision to become a free paper in the face of a 17% decline in paid circulation. In its 2006 Publisher's Statement filed with the United States Postal Service - a public document and the last one required before it became a free paper - The Independent's average paid circulation was down less than one percent from the prior year.

The Inquirer and Mirror's 2007 Publisher's Statement showed annual average on-island circulation down 18.4% from the prior year and for the September 6, 2007 issue, the on-island circulation was down 19.3% from the prior year's comparable issue. Total average circulation, including off-island subscriptions, declined 16% and the September 6 issue specific circulation was down 21.3%.

WALTER'S DELI OPEN FOR SEASON ON BROAD STREET Anew, traditional New York-style deli opened Monday, April 14 on the Broad Street strip where Pronto operated a take-out last year. Called Walter's after manager Scott Kopp's late father, the deli specializes in generous urban-type subs with side dishes such as potato salad, cole slaw and chicken salad as accompaniments. Bread is baked daily and meats are roasted daily for the products.

Kopp, who bought his first delicatessen on Long Island at the age of 18, moved to Nantucket about two years ago with his wife Trish, an elementary school teacher, and their four children ranging from seven to 15 years of age. Kopp has become the fourth owner/partner in a group consisting of Rogers "Skip" Cabot, Jim Wiemann and Dave Buchmann. Buchmann runs Stubby's and Wiemann runs Island Coffee, both on the Broad Street strip. Cabot is a silent partner.

SECONDS SHOP MOVING TO N. BEACH STREET The popular thrift store, The Seconds Shop, is moving to a new year-round location at 17 North Beach St. Though the shop is still open at 16 Amelia Drive until the end of May, its volunteer staff is slowly moving donated merchandise to the new spot which provides them with a five-year lease. A definite date to reopen has not be set.

Proceeds from shop sales benefit Nantucket Behavioral Health Services. The Seconds Shop will be located at the end of the line of buildings beginning with the office of The Nantucket Independent.
