AT ITS MEETING ON APRIL 16, THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN:
• Acting chairman Michael Kopko explained that at an earlier meeting, the Board decided to hold off on the election of officers for two weeks to allow the members to take time to decide who should be the chairman of the board. The vote is scheduled to be taken on April 30, at the board's regular Wednesday night meeting.

• Held a public hearing to take suggestions as to what the official name of two town owned cemeteries should be. A number of people from of African decent, including Frank and Betty Spriggs and Augie Ramos, spoke in favor of naming the cemetery at Mill Hill the "Colored Peoples Cemetery." They all spoke about keeping the name historic and not caving to political correctness. The board also discussed officially naming the 'Founder's Burial Ground." A vote to make both names official will be taken at tonight's meeting.

• Approved a public assembly permit for a number of events for the wine festival. • Approved a public assembly permit for a fundraiser by Small Friends.

• Approved a year round wine and malt beverage license for the Nantucket Trading Post located at 12 Nobadeer Farm Road.

• Denied an appeal of a Historic District Commission decision to allow the moving of a house at 16 Baxter Road , upholding the decision to allow the move.

• Denied an appeal of the Historic District Commission for the construction of a barn off Gardner Road. The action was called a "revenge appeal" and was being done "out of spite" by attorney Sarah Alger, who was representing the landowner wishing to construct the barn, Shawkemo Ducklands, LLC. The landowner who is making the appeal, See Terrier Trust, recently had a subdivision approved in the area and Shawkamo Ducklands, LLC had been a vocal opponent of the approval.

AT ITS MEETING TONIGHT, THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN WILL:

• Hear a request for proclamation by the Town Clerk to make the week of May 4 though May 10 "Municipal Clerks Week."

• Hear a request for proclamation by the Department of Public Works to make April 25, "Arbor Day on Nantucket."

• Hear a recommendation by the Traffic Safety Work Group to place a stop sigh at Salem Street, at the intersection of Washington Street, as well as install a crosswalk.

• Hear a report by the Town Manager on the status of the fiscal year 2006 and 2007 financial audits.

• Hear a departmental overview of the Marine Department. • Review the 2008 Annual Town Meeting.

• Hear a request to schedule and adopt the warrant for the 2008 Special Town Election.

• Vote to make the official designation of cemeteries as was discussed during the public hearing at last week's meeting.
