"The Headhunters" by Peter Lovesey Forget traveling to Europe this summer. With the way the dollar is going, it will soon cost too much to even look at pictures of our European neighbors! You can travel to Chichester in West Sussex, England with Peter Lovesey, however, and it will only cost you $24. Lovesey's new book "The Headhunters" is a rollicking good mystery centered around a group of the English equivalent of Yuppies who, over pints at the local pub, contemplate the demise of one of their bosses. When dead bodies start showing up in the oddest of places, and questions surround those that look the guiltiest, a mystery worthy of Agatha Christie ensues. Suspenseful to the last page, "The Headhunters" will make you want to re-read it after you're finished! - Lucretia Voigt, Mitchell's Book Corner Nantucket Bookworks 25 Broad Street, 228-4000 "The Shadow Year"
Jeffrey Ford is a guy whose fiction Dick Cumbie and I published in "The Nantucket Review" back in the late '70s. He's published seven or eight books since. This one is set in the '60s, in a Long Island community plagued by a prowler. The young, unnamed narrator and his older, junior-high brother Jim set out to investigate. They're part of a family in which the father works three jobs, the mother is an alcoholic devotee of Sherlock Holmes, and the younger sister Mary adopts several different personae. When it seems that the prowler may have turned murderer and Mary makes some uncanny contributions to unraveling the mystery, things take on a decidedly chilly quality. - Dick Burns, Nantucket Bookworks Nantucket Atheneum 1 India Street, 228-1110 "Little Night" written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales As the day comes to an end, Mother Sky fills a tub with stars and calls, "Bath time for Little Night!" and Little Night answers, "Can't come. I am hiding and you have to find me, Mama. Find me now!" Author/illustrator Yuyi Morales has created a magical bedtime story from the interactions between mother and child, as daily routines are interwoven with a playful hide-and-seek game. Morales' richly colorful, expansive paintings add mystery and sparkle. Also available in a Spanishlanguage edition. Recommended for ages 3-5.
