WEEKLY UPDATE Terminal addition foundation done this week In preparation for re-paving part of the ramp that construction crews tore up to excavate for the addition to the east end of the terminal at the airport, the airport will get more fill material to ready they area. This paving will produce more space for summer air service

Also this week, expect the airport to move the temporary fence closer to the foundation area to accommodate regional jets and larger aircraft and it will put up a tent for an enlarged departure holding area.

In two weeks, steel arriving on the island soon will be erected to form the frame of the addition and electrical, HVAC and plumbing contracts are scheduled to start during this time.

TRAVELER IMPACT In an effort to enhance summer operating procedures, the airport is going to be adding two more temporary trailers in the next week or so to the three that currently serve as ticketing areas for all secure flights leaving Nantucket. One of the trailers is for summer airline service offices and the addition of two more ticket counters. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Nantucket Memorial Airport terminal work includes additions and renovations totaling around 18,000 square feet, the most notable of which is a new wing off the east end of the existing main terminal facing the hangar area. When finished, all flights to Boston and New York will pass through this new wing and baggage will be screened there with the Transportation Safety Administration's new baggage screening equipment. Other additions to the building will face the parking lot off the main terminal and will free up office and ticket counter space by removing maintenance storage below the air traffic control tower and widening that part of the terminal northward so all ticket counters can be located in the same area. The parking configuration will stay the same, as will drop-off and pickup. The project cost of $26 million is being borne by: the Federal Aviation Administration - $9 million; airport fees - $5 million and Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission - $12 million.
