Rick Atherton was successful in his fourth bid for the Board of Selectmen as 1,554 voters chose the Finance Committee chairman to help steer the town. Atherton will join Brian Chadwick, who was able to hold on to his seat garnering1,959 votes, atop the Nantucket political landscape.

In a very tight race, Whitey Willauer and David Gray came up short, receiving 1,486 and 1,336 votes respectively.

Nantucket voters overwhelming rejected idea of the Town authorizing the use of a public beach for the Sconset Beach Preservation Fund with 2,986 votes against and 470 in favor of the idea.

Linda Williams was able to hold off selectman Michael Kopko for the only open seat on the Planning Board, besting him 1,799 votes to 1,445

Incumbent School Committee member Dr. Tim Lepore was able to retain his seat for another term and will be joined by political newcomer Robin Harvey.

Harvey led the voting with 2,871 votes, followed by Lepore with 2,683 votes, while incumbent Christine Elahi fell short with 958 votes.

Lepore and Harvey seemed to enjoy widespread support with in the school system after receiving the endorsements from the teachers union last week. Lepore has been a staunch critic of superintendent Robert Pellicone, and some see Harvey as a need change to Elahi, who has supported Pellicone throughout her term.

In addition to the Sconset Beach Preservation Fund, there were four other ballot questions.

This year, the changing of the planning guard happened with 10-year veteran Frank Spriggs stepping aside to let Linda Williams join the Planning Board for her first five-year term on the board.

Williams bumped fellow challenger Michael Kopko out of contention with 1,799 votes, 354 more than Kopko's total of 1,445.

Next to the race for the two open seats on the Board of Selectmen, the run for the same number of openings on the Historic District Commission was equally heated with current Chairman Dirk Roggeveen defending his seat by scoring 1,995 votes.

Newcomer David Barham joins Roggeveen on the HDC by edging out Associate HDC members John Wagley and Diane Coombs for the other empty seat with 1,307 votes over Wagley's 1,109 and Coombs' 975. As she ran unopposed in defense of her associate seat, garnering 2,363 votes, Coombs remains on the board, but Wagley's term expires this year.

Voters turned down the idea of building a parking garage downtown 2,223 to 1,311 on Question six, but said yes to moving Nantucket toward more environmentally friendly policy making decisions approving Question 4 2,349 to 859.

The job title of Town Administrator will be switched to Town Manager after voters passed Question One 2,055 to 990 and an audit advisory committee will be established after Question Two passed 1,985 to 864.

Running unopposed and all winning their contest were Fred Holdgate, 2,254 votes, and Bill Blount, 2,390 for the Shellfish and Harbor Advisory Board, Linda Williams for Nantucket Housing Authority with 2,305 votes, Allen Reinhard for Land Bank with 2,850, Nelson Eldridge for Nantucket Water Commission with 2,785, Gerald Eldridge for 'Sconset Water Commission with 2,784 and Sarah Alger for Town
