Teacher of the Week
ROB STETSON

ROB BENCHLEY/The Independent
Beginning this week, The Nantucket Independent will profile the dedicated island teachers who are retiring from the public schools this year. Rob Stetson has been teaching computer imaging, Web site design, advanced computers and consumer science in the high school for the past four years. He taught before that in Florida and in Worcester, Mass.

Although he began his career with Chase-Manhattan Bank, Stetson was soon drawn to education because he thought it would "widen his scope" by imparting what he had learned to students. "And it proved to be right."

Why are you retiring?

I am retiring from Massachusetts. I'm planning to move to Florida, and I'm thinking of property management. I would like to try that if I don't teach again.

What did you like about teaching on Nantucket?

Everything - the faculty, Principal Kelly, Assistant Principal John Lucchini. I had kind of a surprise heartrelated issue and the administration was so good to me; they're very supportive here. I enjoy teaching; I enjoy the students.

What will you miss about Nantucket?

I will miss the natural landscape of the island. It's hard to put into words, but Nantucket is completely unique and not like any other place in the world. I'll miss the town and the historical value of the island. And, of course, I'll miss the students and my colleagues.

- Steve Sheppard I
