MESSAGE FOUND IN BOTTLE Of the 40 bottles with messages in them that Nantucket cod fishermen Pennel Ames and his 15-year-old daughter, Amelia, flung from his commercial fishing vessel, Kaos, on July 29, 2006 on his first trip that season, this bottle, above, was found on the beach La Palue in the town of Crozon in Brittany, France, a well-known surfing spot with a good left/right beach break.
But instead of sending a letter to Ames using the address on the note, which is what Ames prefers so he can keep a record of the bottles' journeys in a scrapbook, the bottle's finder, Bernard Bouffinier e-mailed news of his discovery to The Nantucket Independent on March 14.
Since 2000, Ames and his family have tossed nearly 500 bottled messages into the water of Nantucket and received letters from towns on the Cape and Islands, the Hebrides off the Scottish coast, County Mayo in Ireland, Wales, Jamaica, Southern Portugal, the Canary Islands, Nova Scotia, Bermuda, Cuba and Grenada.
Ames averages one response per 50 bottles launched. Read more about Pennel Ames' ocean bottle messaging in the online version of the Jan. 24,
2007 issue of The Nantucket Independent in our archives at

AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR Historic District Commission candidate Deborah Timmermann withdrew herself from the 2008 race for two open seats on the HDC on Sunday, citing time constraints.
"Due to family commitments, I find I am unable to give the time and enthusiasm needed to proceed with the campaign and to serve on the commission for the coming year," said Timmermann in letter to the editor sent to the Independent on Sunday afternoon.
Timmermann's bid to get onto the HDC was her second in two years. In the 2007 town elections, Timmermann garnered 1,237 votes, losing by 374 votes to Incumbent John McLaughlin and 403 votes to Incumbent Linda Williams.
Timmermann, an interior designer, is not out of the HDC arena entirely, as she is the sponsor of Article 95, which asks that the HDC adopt a policy encouraging property owners to install solar panels on their buildings and Article 96 that sets a policy on contractor registration for buildings construction prior to 1900.
Timmermann said she is confident that she is leaving the race for Dawn Hill's and Dirk Roggeveen's seats in the capable hands of HDC Associate Member Diane Coombs and Challenger David Barham.
"With both running for seats on the HDC, I am comfortable withdrawing from the race this year," she said. "I look forward to running again at the next opportunity."
ABREM QUARY PHASE II
For the 108 qualified applicants remaining after the lottery for the 28 affordable units in the Abrem Quary 40B subdivision who didn't get a house, there is still hope. Nantucket Homes for People, Inc. announced last week its plans for phase two of this 40B, which will include 36 more units. The houses, described by developer Cliff Schorer as bungalow-style, will be smaller with one or two bedrooms in each and cost less than the recently filled phase one.
Schorer said the plan is for two levels of affordability based on percentages of Nantucket's median income. Twenty-five percent of the units will be sold to applicants whose qualifying household incomes are 80 percent of Nantucket's median income for $139,000 to $199,000 and the other 75 percent of the houses will go to islanders who make 150 percent of Nantucket's median household income for $199,000 to $329,000.
The houses would be built on a 3.1-acre lot north of Blueberry Lane.
Schorer will present this new 40B development proposal to the Zoning Board of Appeals at its meeting on April 11 at 1 p.m. in the garage at
