Sitting Pretty on Pleasant J Pepper Frazier Company $1,399,000 In-town living is a wonderful thing. To be within walking distance of restaurants and shops, the waterfront and many of the island's historic sites means that you can take in Nantucket at your own pace and not have to jump into the car (and sometimes exasperating summer traffic) every time you need something. This particular home, at 32 Pleasant street, halfway between Main Street and Five Corners, is ideally located within the historic district, yet is also convenient to mid-island shopping, the schools and more.
The home itself could not be more picture perfect (Perhaps this lovely and tranquil property is why Pleasant Street got its name - we do not know). Built in 1870, the home was completely renovated in 1998 and has been well maintained since. The façade features a quaint bump-out bay, ornately scrolled corbels holding up the front porch overhang and heavy, overhanging roof lines reminiscent of Victorian architecture - yet more understated and simple. The corner lot also features expertly manicured landscaping and a wonderful, large shade tree partially covered by ivy. The shady g13arden on the corner, surrounded by low hedges adds greatly to the appeal.
Entering through the front door with its dual arched glass lights, you find yourself in a grand foyer. A compass rose greets you, as does a thick, square newel post at the foot of the stairs, with a small ivory mortgage button set in the top. (It's unclear if this is the original mortgage button, or if it was added during the painstaking renovation, but it is a nice touch nonetheless.)
To the right is a sunny sitting room that benefits from the bay's light and extra space. This room features wonderful ornamental details which include a central ceiling medallion of cast plaster, an ornamental mantelpiece set into one wall and several sculpted frieze details around the bay.
Steps beyond the living room are the kitchen and dining area. This spot is in the center of the house, but enjoys plenty of natural light. The dining area is open and inviting. The kitchen features some exceptional cabinets from a well known cabinet maker as well as like-new appliances. There's a small marble-topped peninsula here with room for one or two stools at which you and a family member can enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning.
In warm weather, however, you may decide to take your breakfast outside, going through the tiled mudroom area complete with washer and dryer. The side door leads to the lovely, welcoming, raised deck and patio. This area will become the center of your family's summer gatherings - an outdoor extension of the house's living space three months of the year.
The first floor is completed by a large and quiet bedroom suite which occupies the back of the home It features a sizeable full bath, complete with a comfortable and inviting whirlpool tub set into one corner. Another detail of note in this suite: a stain-glass insert in the south-facing wall brings in light from the mudroom, yet provides for plenty of privacy.
The second floor features a small sitting area with additional storage at the top of the landing, ideal for a little reader's nook. There are also two bedroom suites here, both with full baths. Here the angles of the ceilings and dormer insets add to the character and charm of, as does the period wallpaper and the classic Nantucket pine floor, painted a calming, high-gloss offwhite. The light and sense of space in both of these bedrooms is inspiring.
This antique three-bedroom, three bath home, with full basement and attractive details, located in the historic
district, is offered at $1,399,000.00. I
