Selectmen join climate protection program
Sustainable Nantucket secured the unanimous support of the Board of Selectmen last week when the board agreed to participate in the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign.

The Cities for Climate Protection Campaign provides a basis for municipal governments to work towards lowering greenhouse gas emissions while promoting education about climate change issues.

Nantucket's Energy Study Committee, which is looking to place wind turbines in several locations around the island as part of its energy plan for Nantucket, is the kind of green initiative that Sustainable Nantucket's Green Council supports. Sustainable Nantucket's ongoing environment friendly projects also include harbor water quality improvements, public transportation, and a buy local food campaign.

The Board of Selectmen's agreement that Nantucket participate in the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign validates the work of Sustainable Nantucket's Green Council. "My sense is that the town has been pursuing various renewable alternative solution options and initiatives and they see this as a way to help current as well as future initiatives that may be identified through the planning process," said Sustainable Nantucket Executive Director Michelle Whelan.
