JASPER YOUNG

The annual badminton tournament that continues through this week draws hundreds of kids and adults every year. A prominent and very wellknown competitor in this tournament is senior Jasper Young. He has taken part in Badminton-Mania since his freshman year and with his bandana and fierce drop-shot he is a force to be reckoned with. While not playing badminton he can be found on the soccer field or just playing his guitar. The Nantucket Independent caught up with Jasper at his house in this week's Time Out: ON BADMINTON

S: How is the tournament going so far?

J: Good. I got third place in mixed doubles with Grace MacLellan and second in men's doubles with Jordan Ferreira. Those are the only tournaments I've been able to participate in so far.

S: What is your most effective shot?

J: The drop shot. It's when you give the birdie a soft tap and it just goes right over the net. It's effective because it catches people off guard and it's usually pretty hard to get.

S: What's been your top highlight to date?

J: I'd say getting third place in men's singles last year, because it's the event I care the most about.

ON SCHOOL

S: What has been your favorite class this year?

J: My favorite class is jewel/ silkscreen because it's the first art class I've ever taken and it's really cool to do something besides academics all the time. And Mr. Leone is a really good teacher.

S: Who has been your favorite teacher during your high school career?

J: Ms. Phaneuf by far, because you can tell she really cares about the students and she motivates me to excel in her class.

S: What event are you most looking forward to during your senior year?

J: Graduation, because I'm excited to get ready for college.

ON JASPER

S: What's on your playlist right now?

J: I'd say some Citizen Cope, Arcade Fire, Ben Harper and some Zeppelin.

S: What was the last good movie you saw?

J: "There Will Be Blood." I recommend it to everyone.

S: What are your other interests?

J: I like to play soccer and guitar

and I enjoy working on bikes. I
