CURTIS BARNES WINS STATE HOSPITALITY AWARD Island resident Curtis Barnes has been recognized by Governor Deval Patrick for his work in Nantucket tourism.
On Friday, March 29, during the 21st annual Massachusetts Governor's Conference on Travel and Tourism in Boston, Governor Patrick presented 14 awards to Bay Staters who have had a positive effect on the tourism industry through outstanding service to visitors.
Barnes was singled out for his role as Nantucket Town Crier for over 25 years. He was nominated for the award by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce.
During a breakfast at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston, guests watched a video that highlighted the 14 recipients and their individual talents and accomplishments. Each winner was greeted and congratulated by Governor Patrick.
STUDENT SENTENCED IN HALBERSTAM DEATH Agraduate student who had pleaded no contest to a charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the death of David Halberstam was sentenced last month to serve five days in jail but a judge recommended that he serve the time on a supervised work program instead.
According to an Associated Press report, Kevin Jones, 27, a University of California Berkeley journalism student, was driving Halberstam to an interview last April 23 when he allegedly ran a red light while making an illegal left turn.
The Associated Press reported that Jones was also ordered to serve 200 hours of community service in a school where, the judge said, he could honor Halberstam's memory by helping children learn to read and write. At the sentencing hearing, Jones "said he would dedicate his career to upholding Halberstam's ideals," the Associated Press said.
