Records fall at south sectional swim meet
Ainsley Ellis broke two Nantucket High School records and Beau Garufibroke another during the south sectional swimming and diving championships held at MIT last weekend.

Ellis broke the school record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.78 while placing second at MIT. Her time of 103.57 in the 100-yard backstroke was good for another school record and fourth place at the meet.

Garufiset a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.65, good for eighth place at MIT.

Overall, the girls finished seventh out of 30 teams competing Saturday, tallying 66 points.

Theresa Head turned in two personal best times, one in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:12.72, and one in the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 1:00.22.

Ashley Martin had a personal best time of 27.08 in the 50-yard freestyle.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay event, Head, Martin, Ellis and Carly Jensen finished fourth overall with a time of 1:47.81. The team of Martin, Head, Ellis and Haley Cabre placed fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:56.59.

On the boys side, Nantucket placed 17th out of 40 schools with a total of 18 points in Sunday's competitions.

Besides setting the new school mark in the 200 freestyle, Garufialso placed fourth overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.55.

The boys competed in three relay events. The 200-yard medley relay team of Henry Toole, Sam Toole, Jeremy Schneider and Will Martin placed 23rd overall. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Garufi, Martin and the Toole brothers placed 12th overall, while the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Martin, Garufiand the Toole brothers placed 14th.

Both Ellis and Garufiwill swim in All-State meets this weekend. Garufiwill compete in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke at Boston University on Saturday, while Ellis will compete in the 200- yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle

events at Harvard on Sunday. I
