"The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick
The 2008 Caldecott Medal was awarded to Brian Selznick, the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children, for "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." Selznick uses graphite illustrations like a storyboard in a silent film to accompany the text in his telling of this endearing mystery for young adult readers. The resourceful Hugo Cabret depends on his wit, will, and mechanical skills to survive in a subterranean Paris train station where he scrambles to fix a human like machine that might answer questions of his past and set in motion the gears of his future. This book incorporates art, film, history, mythology, and science in a "Oliver Twist" theme, as two young people learn to trust each other in order to solve their inherent mysteries.

"The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (Rated R)
This highly acclaimed western starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck is a character driven account of the last days of the fabled former confederate outlaw. Regarded as a charismatic larger than life bad man, Jesse James's bloody exploits captured the fascination and admiration of a nation transfixed with its hunger for antiheroes. Andrew Dominick directs the powerfully objective story amidst the backdrop of a country still convalescing from the wounds of a war that romanticized the train and bank robbing rebel.
