Program is free with admission to the Museum and offered at no cost In addition to the herbal topiary program, the NLBM currently offers an exhibit of baskets by Nantucket residents entitled, "On My Own Time." Hours for the exhibit are Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays & Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Upcoming events include "I Love Lightship Basket Days" February 15-17 and "Cape Cod Lighthouses," a slide presentation by Douglas Bingham of the Coast Guard Museum on February 23 at 1 p.m. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY Swing and Salsa together? Wear your dancing shoes and plan to twirl your partner under the whale in Gosnell Hall. The Nantucket Historical Association will partner with the NCMC Nantucket School of Music Jazz Band during its second annual Valentine's Day Dance on Friday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street. Erik Wendelken will conduct the band. The big-band orchestra sounds of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Artie Shaw will fill Gosnell Hall as members of the Jazz Band perform such classic pieces as "In the Mood," "Satin Doll," "Pennsylvania 6-5000" and "April in Paris." In keeping with this season's One Book One Island Cuban theme, and for good measure, some fast-moving tunes with a Latin flair will be added to the selection. Dance instructor Jedediyah Williams, a physics teacher at Nantucket High School, will give an introductory Salsa lesson. The NCMC Jazz Band is composed of local musicians who practice regularly and perform at various island events, including summer concerts at Children's Beach. NEW DIRECTORS JOIN NAC BOARD Thomas B. Lewis, Jr., Dr. Gerald R. Mack, Ema Hudson, Marli Guzzetta and Pamela Pindell have recently joined the Nantucket Arts Council board of directors, according to Arts Council president Reggie Levine. "We're delighted to have these new directors, who bring such diverse backgrounds and talents to the Arts Council board," Levine said. Thomas B. Lewis, Jr. is a resident of New Canaan, Connecticut and Nantucket with his wife, Muffy, and three children, Whitney, Sam and Elizabeth. In addition to serving on the Arts Council board, he is president of the board of trustees for the New Canaan Nature Center, a nonprofit environmental education center and sanctuary. A graduate of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, he received his B.S. from the University of Colorado. Lewis was a managing director and partner at the global investment banking and securities firm Goldman Sachs in New York. Dr. Gerald Mack was most recently the executive director of the NCMC/Nantucket School of Music. He currently serves as director of choral activities for the Great Waters Music Festival, which he founded 13 years ago in New Hampshire. Dr. Mack also was music director of the Worcester Chorus and director of choral activities at the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford. He has performed at Carnegie Hall and Tully Hall and his festival appearances include the New York Mostly Mozart Festival and the Salzburg and the Dubrovnik International Music Festivals. Dr. Mack has also led concerts in Russia, Estonia and Sweden. He resides on Nantucket with his wife, Nancy. They are the parents of three grown children. Dr. Mack is serving the Arts Council as the director of the 2008 Winter Concert Series. Ema Hudson is special events assistant at the Nantucket Historical Association. Prior to her move to Nantucket in 2007, she served as assistant director of marketing for the Downtown Committee of Syracuse in Syracuse, New York, where she was instrumental in production of the annual Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival. She also was event coordinator for the Armory Square Association of Syracuse. Ema received a B.F.A. in art history from Syracuse University and served on the board of the Redhouse, a multi-disciplined arts house in Syracuse producing plays, exhibits and other events. Marli Guzzetta, who is arts and features editor at N Magazine, moved from Florida to Nantucket in 2006 to assume an arts editorship at The Nantucket Independent, where her writing won top honors from the New England Press Association. She first began writing about the arts as an undergraduate at Yale University, where she served as an arts editor at the Yale Daily News. Before moving to Nantucket she was a senior associate editor at Gainesville Magazine (New York Times Regional Media Group), was a stringer for People Magazine and regularly contributed arts and entertainment features to the Miami New Times and New Times Broward/Palm Beach. Guzzetta holds an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Florida and a B.A. in English from Yale. Portrait artist Pamela Pindell has been a yearround resident of Nantucket since 1983. She began painting in high school and has continued ever since. Pindell has been showing her work continuously at The Gallery at 4 India Street since 1990 and has had two independent shows at the same gallery. She had her first independent show at Trees' Place in Orleans, Massachusetts in 1988 and has had seven more independent shows at the gallery, in addition to exhibiting there continuously. Pindell is a board member of the Guild of Boston Artists and has received numerous awards from the organization for her work. Her work has also been recognized by the Cape Cod Artists Association and the Pastel Society of America in New York City. Pindell has grown children who served as her favorite models when they were young. I |
