MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
Sanford Real Estate $1,795,000
The neighborhood around the property at 26 Hummock Pond Road is mature and moderately dense. But you'd never know it, standing in the middle of the property- even in winter. The dense shrubs and trees, plus a long pea gravel driveway, give you the impression that it is the only house in the neighborhood. Well, actually, not one house, but two. The deep lot features two homes of nearly the same size. And they are far enough removed from each other - over 150 feet - that each one feels like its own separate domain.

The main house, with its dramatic twin dormers, sits closer to the road; its façade clad in yellow clapboard. The well maintained home sports a quarterboard bearing the name "Rose of Tralee." From the road, it looks like a modest cottage. The casual observer might never guess that there are four bedrooms and two baths in this home. But there are.

As you enter, you find yourself in the generous foyer. On your right is a sitting room with a fireplace surrounded by a dramatic, federal style mantelpiece. The floors throughout the home are wide, honey pine boards that add character and charm. To your left is the first of four bedrooms. This bedroom shares a full bath with the ample and sunny bedroom in the left rear corner of the house. Straight ahead is the stairway to the second floor. In many ways, this home, built in the early 1990s, echoes the layouts of many historic homes on Nantucket, with a central hallway and a kitchen at the rear of the first floor.

The kitchen is gracious and welcoming. Much of its light comes through a pair of sliding glass doors that lead to the back deck (a deck that is nearly the same square footage as the footprint of the home it serves). There are modern, white appliances here - dishwasher, refrigerator, range and a microwave suspended from the upper cabinets. This is clearly a kitchen designed for efficiency and workflow. The cabinets are a bright white with simple raised panel door fronts and stainless steel pulls. The sink is also bright white and divided into two basins. It is set into a slategrey, textured countertop that has the look of real stone. In the center of the kitchen there is room for a long farmer's table and up to 10 chairs. Or a free-standing prep island and a smaller table. Either way, there is plenty of room for family and guests alike.

On the second floor, two very large bedrooms stretch from the front of the house to the rear. One is approximately one- third larger than the other, but both feature plenty of closet space as well as built-in window seats nestled within the two front-facing dormers. These two bedrooms share a single full bath which is conveniently located near both bedroom doors at the top of the pine stairs.

This home also features a full, unfinished basement and a sizeable, manicured back yard. In the summer, it is surrounded by blooming hydrangea and climbing roses.

The second home, which is at the very end of the 300-foot driveway, is nearly the same size as the first, and has an almost identical layout, with four bedrooms and two baths. Its quarterboard reads, "Killarney Cottage." Between the two houses is a cozy, hidden garden shed named "The Ring of Kerry."

This eight-bedroom, four-bath property, close to town and on the way to Bartlett's Farm, Miacomet golf course and Cisco beach, is offered at
