"The Commoner"
by John Burnham Schwartz
One of our star employees in his youth and now an up-and-coming "American literary prince," Schwartz has painted a subtle, richly detailed portrait of a world clinging to its proud past while marching toward an inevitable future. The novel is based on the true-life story of the first commoner to enter into the Japanese imperial family. The heroine, an intelligent, strong-willed young woman, falls in love with and marries the Crown Prince of Japan, instantly thrusting her into a privileged but rigid and bewildering existence that almost destroys her. Crafted with delicate metaphor and patient clarity, her struggle will captivate you, her strength will touch you and ultimately, her destiny will amaze you. This tale of love, loss, individuality and obligation is all the more meaningful because it is all the more real.

"Before You Were Mine"
story by Maribeth Boelts,
pictures by David Walker
Aboy wonders about the life his new dog led, before being adopted from the shelter. What was his name? What was his family like? How did he come to be lost and alone? David Walker, illustrator of "Puppies, Puppies, Puppies!" has created tender pastel drawings to visualize the boy's thoughts and to endear the adopted pet to the reader. Perfect for families with shelter pets and those considering adoption of one. A sweet story that will appeal especially to ages 3-7

"Rocket Science" (Rated R for some sexual content and language)

This independent comedy follows Hal Hefner, a stuttering high school student, as he tries out for the debate team. Directed by Jeffrey Blitz ("Spellbound," 2002), "Rocket Science" stars a slew of unknown, but phenomenal actors who bring a refreshing vitality and realism to their characters. Reese Thompson stands out in particular as the main character battling his way through the awkwardness and romantic pitfalls of high school. Although this type of quirky comingof age story is nothing new, "Rocket Science" manages to be both original and funny. This film played at The Nantucket Film Festival last year.

"Canvas" (Rated PG-13 for mature thematic elements)

Inspired by a true story, "Canvas" played at the Nantucket Film Festival last year to sold out crowds. Starring Joey Pantoliano, Marcia Gay Harden and Devon Gearhart, "Canvas" tells the story of a family dealing with a mother's mental illness, and is based on writer/director Joseph Greco's own childhood. Marcia Gay Harden is superb as an artist and loving mother who is held hostage by the chemical imbalance that distorts her mental capacity. Joey Pantoliano plays the father and husband who is trying to keep his family together, and the depth he brings to this character is breathtaking. Devon Gearhart brings innocence to a role that would be difficult even for a mature actor to play. If you missed this at the Film Festival last year, don't

make the same mistake twice! I
