JV boys, girls face P-town, Vineyard, Norfolk Aggie
BY STEVE SHEPPARD INDEPENDENT SPORTS EDITOR
The boys' and girls' junior varsity basketball teams played twice over the past week, with both teams taking on the Vineyard at home, the boys playing at Provincetown Saturday and the girls hosting Norfolk Agricultural Saturday afternoon.

In a tight contest, the girls lost a tough one to the Vineyard a week ago, 30-29.

Nantucket rallied back twice in the contest until, with just over a minute to go, the young Lady Whalers trailed by two, 29-27. A Vineyard foul shot gave the visitors a three-point lead, 30-27, but Lindsay Fry made it a one-point game after she was fouled at the 34 second mark and sank a pair of free throws. Nantucket got the ball back with three seconds to go, but there wasn't time to get off a shot.

It was a different story on Saturday, however, as the girls outlasted Norfolk Agricultural, 27-21. Caroline Stanton was high scorer for Nantucket with nine points, followed by Thayer Dugan and Drew Moore with six points, Morgan Dugan with four and Fry with two.

With the win, the girls are now 5-2 on the season. The JV girls next home game is against Provincetown on Monday, Feb. 4.

On the boys' side, Jamison Viera sank four 3-pointers for the young Whalers in their Wednesday matchup with the Vineyard, but the visitors prevailed, 62-29.

After the Vineyard took a 7-0 first quarter advantage, Nantucket came right back in the second period to score 13 points to the Vineyard's 19. The young Whalers kept it close, as they were only outscored by six points in the third period, but the visitors outpaced the home team in the fourth quarter.

High scorer for Nantucket was Viera with 15 points, followed by Josh Sibley-Liddle with 6 points, Curran Huyser with 4, Michael Molta with 2 and Kevin McLean also had 2.

Against Provincetown, the boys went to their inside game to win, 44-32. Scoring were Viera with 11 points, Curran Huyser with 8, Mac McGrath with 7 and Molta with 7. The win puts the young Whalers at 4-1 on the year.
