BUNGALOW MADE BEAUTIFUL Coffin Real Estate $2,395,000 The 1930's bungalow-style home is a bit of a rarity on Nantucket. And this particular home is rarer still: a fully restored bungalow using many of the original features, while updating and improving the layout to meet the needs of modern Nantucket life. The architect for this project, one of the island's most prominent names, appears to have relished the task of reworking this small home and bringing it, lovingly, into the 21st century.
Although one cannot tell from the front of the building, a complete second story containing two generous bedrooms has been added, as well as an all new master bedroom suite added on to the rear of first floor, as well as an outdoor deck. In all, the home has been expanded to nearly 3,000 square feet of living space, all without changing the home's street-facing appearance or the way it relates to the neighborhood. This truly is a marvelous renovation. And yet, the true marvel lies within the details that this home contains.
The home sits on a curved corner lot where New Lane becomes Main Street. The landscaping follows the contours of the road, providing plenty of privacy and side yard space. There is actually room and enough available ground cover for an additional small cottage on the lot.
The walkway that leads to the front porch consists of white gravel broken up by flagstone slabs and lined by granite Belgian block. This contrasts rather nicely with the new, manicured, emerald green lawn. The porch itself is half covered and half fully enclosed and climate controlled, which means that one can sit and "watch the pass" 12 months of the year. The covered portion features a wide mahogany deck. A porch swing would be perfect. The enclosed part is a wonderful solarium with a bead board ceiling and a rustic tiled floor. The light is ideal.
Step through the front door and you enter two large, wide-open spaces separated by a room-spanning archway. The living room space features expert woodwork details. The dramatic fireplace is surrounded by traditional raised paneling. A built-in window seat is flanked by two shelf units suitable for books or electronics.
The fireplace paneling also contains a secret door to the lower level. Knock on it the right way and clever spring and magnet hardware reveals the stairway to the fully finished basement with a recreation room, cedar closet, bathroom and a separate stucco- fisnished room that is ready to become a wine cellar, exercise space or whatever strikes your fancy.
Back on the main floor, opposite the living room and through the arch is the dining area. There are wonderful builtins here as well, in addition to a dramatic coffered ceiling and plenty of light from the banks of windows that wrap the space. The lustrous flooring throughout the first floor is actually the original fir flooring, expertly reclaimed and refinished to a warm honey glow.
Following the logical flow of the home, you find yourself in the kitchen. Clearly, no expense has been spared here. The cabinets are of the highest quality, as are the appliances. The countertops and the top of the free-standing island prep space are made of warm, polished granite finished with a decorative ogee edge. The deep, white farm sink is every kitchen maven's dream.
Beyond, a pair of French doors leads to the ample, private, back deck. To the left is the hallway to a powder room and the laundry and utility spaces, the (seemingly hidden) stairway to the second floor and the entrance to the master suite.
The master bedroom features high bead board ceilings with two dramatic exposed collar ties. The floors are rimmed with a strip of the original fir flooring that is used as an accent to newer wood. The master bath offers all new fixtures and expert cabinetry and storage. The large glass shower is stunning.
On the second floor one finds two very large bedrooms with walk-in closets and a massive amount of storage. These two bedrooms share a central bath. The bathtub evokes a bygone era with its high lipped back and claw feet.
This expertly renovated and restored three-bedroom, two-full-bath, two-halfbath bungalow, with nearly 3,000 square feet of space and just a short walk from
town, is offered at $2,395,000. I
