2008 A Look Ahead
Waterfront
Marine Superintendent Dave Fronzuto has several tasks nailed down for the next 12 months. They are, in no particular order:

The Marine Department will use Nantucket scallops to spawn one million more seed at Aquaculture Research Corp. in South Dennis, Mass. to augment the island's wild population.
• Building a second story for the Marine Department over the existing bathrooms and connecting with his secondstory office before the summer to consolidate all his staff in one building at the head of the town pier.

• Reorganizing the Marine Department into three focused categories: public access; harbor plan and enforcement and operations, and coastal management including shellfish, SBPF and water quality issues. These categories will be overseen by Beach Manager Jeff Carlson, Fronzuto and Assistant Harbormaster Sheila Lucey, and Town Biologist Keith Conant and Shellfish Biologist Jeff Mercer, respectively,

• Authoring commercial shellfishing regulations for eels, mussels and quahogs and getting them adopted by the Board of Selectmen.

• Getting his revised harbor anchoring regulations adopted by the Board of Selectmen.

• Building a second finger pier for the Brant Point boathouse marine lab.

• Possibly building a small floating dock and gangway at the Wauwinet Road landing for Polpis Harbor.

• Guiding the Nantucket Islands Land Bank in its construction of a bulkhead and dinghy dock at Petrel Landing.

• Completing a shellfish management plan.

• Getting the three to five harbor overlay district articles - an outgrowth of the harbor plan - and the docks, piers and wharves article adopted at Town Meeting.

• Getting the harbor plan approved by the state by the end of the year.

• Using Nantucket scallops to spawn one million more seed at Aquaculture Research Corp. in South Dennis, Mass. to augment the island's wild population.

• Getting the Estuaries Project report for Madaket Harbor.

• Opening Sesachacha Pond three times, weather and conditions permitting.

• Making the Children's Beach boat ramp even steeper.
