From Us to You for Christmas
      Of late, Christmas has become a road trip. With children and grandchildren located in far off places and a son whose responsibilities keep him close to his pulpit at this time of year, it just isn't in the cards for us to stay at home.

Long-tailed Ducks
BIRDS OF NANTUCKET
      My first Long-tailed Ducks were actually Old - Squaws. More on that later, but it wasn't clouds of ducks like wisps of smoke flowing across the western sky of Madaket, the sight so many of you may remember. No, this was a pair of ducks in nuptial (spring) plumage floating off Brant Point one summer day back in the 1950s.

"Let It Snow"
      I love snow. Most of us are inconvenienced by snow in some way, either in traveling or shoveling, but I find it more beautiful than bothersome. For me, a snowy day is usually one spent mostly outdoors. Ever since I was a little kid, my brothers and sisters and I always looked forward to snow. I grew up on a farm on the Chesapeake Bay with six brothers and three sisters.

The pet's night before Christmas
      It wasn't until I searched for the original version of this classic Christmas poem, "Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas," that I became aware of a controversy surrounding authorship. Clement C. Moore has been traditionally credited with this poem, which he apparently included in a collection published in 1844.
