Nantucket Atheneum Gallery. 12 p.m. NHA'S Food for Thought Series The Nantucket Historical Association presents Dr. Timothy Lepore, who will discuss "Ticks on Nantucket." With a degree from Tufts Medical School, Lepore began working at the Nantucket Cottage hospital in 1983 and has become known as "the tick specialist" on Nantucket; the island is often called "a hotbed of Lyme disease." Lepore will focus on the who, what, and why of this prevalent illness. Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and usually a skin rash. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully if caught within a few weeks after being bitten. Free to the public. Friday, November 7 4:30 p.m. Greening Nantucket Lecture Series The Nantucket Community School, in partnership with UMass Field Station, is presenting a series of lectures featuring local and national speakers focusing on different aspects of the environment. Each talker will demonstrate different ways in which we, as individuals and a community, can get involved in making better choices with regard to energy, resources and environmentally responsible practices. You will learn how to spot a reputable seller and how to determine you are getting the best buy. Students will learn how to sell items on eBay, including how to best describe and market your item to make sure it sells. Tugs of War Europe In honor of Nantucket's Veterans, The Egan Maritime Institute will present a screening of international documentary film director Robin D. Williams's film "Mayday! Tugs of War Europe," which depicts the story of the WWII lifesavers stationed on tugboats in the Atlantic. Williams will provide an introduction and will be available for questions and answers following the screening. In addition, Williams will also spend time with Nantucket High School students on Wednesday, Nov. 12, discussing historical documentaries and his boundless fascination for ancient and modern history.
