Whalers remember Joe Viera, the man with a big heart

      On Friday at 5 p.m., Jamison Viera, Number 24 of the Nantucket varsity football team, class of 2010, took to the field surrounded by his teammates. The team stood in the shadow of Jersey Number 74, which was hanging from the field house, to honor another outstanding varsity player from three decades ago.

Whalers show improvement despite loss

      Friday night Nantucket faced off against Mayflower League rival Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School. Tentative, Nantucket was unable to gain ground, giving up the ball on downs in their first possession deep in Nantucket's end. Diman, with a student body population of 1,700 and with 147 players to choose from, scored quickly on their first possession.

      Varsity Field Hockey team continues to roll towards the playoffs with a 4- 2 victory last Tuesday over Martha's Vineyard, avenging Nantucket's only loss. Nantucket trounced Lighthouse League member Sturgis 9-0 and tied Mashpee 1-1 on Saturday, ending the week at 8-1-1 and garnering a guaranteed postseason spot.
