We all know that the wind is pervasive on Nantucket. It seems to blow almost all of the time. It penetrates and permeates. It is the element of nature that is most disturbing to some people, but we eventually learn to live with it - or we don't! More ... This past weekend was the cranberry harvest festival at the Milestone bog. It was a beautiful day and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation did a great job rolling out the red carpet. I love this annual event and I love cranberries. The harvest is ongoing, so anyone who missed the weekend festivities can still catch plenty of live bog action throughout the next few weeks. More ... I like wine. I like to buy it and I like to drink it. After all these years of being attracted to distinctive labels for my purchases, particularly those featuring animals, I recently learned that there is a name for my infatuation: critter wines. More ... T he bird was stunning. But to appreciate this you must have a feeling for what it's like to really want to see something. You read about it, see its picture and then start searching. Also try to imagine you are 14 years old with the enthusiasm and impatience of a 14-year-old. This was my first one - my "life" Blue-winged Teal. More ... T hough we don't experience the brilliant colors of autumn that can be seen elsewhere in New England, here on Nantucket there are certain unmistakable signs of Fall. Our color palette changes its hue from wonderfully diverse greens to the subtle autumn tones of burnt sienna, muted red, and copper: the harvest tones. And the much anticipated scalloping season has begun. More ... |
